Who we are

The New Zealand Marine Sciences Society is a non-profit organization, established in 1960, to foster an understanding and appreciation of our marine environment. We provide a means of communication within our marine science community, encourage and assist marine science students and young scientists, and provide advice to government on marine policy issues.

What we do

• Organise an Annual Marine Science Conference
• Provide First Overseas Conference Travel Funds - travel assistance grants to student-members
• Provide Student Research Grant Funds (Due 1 April 2008)- helping MSc and PhD candidates to take their work further than typical institutional funding allows
• Host a list-serv where members can post, discuss, and debate marine science topics, advertise marine science positions, and conduct society business
• Publish the Annual New Zealand Marine Science Review - a handy document containing society papers, bibliographies and posted interests of professional members and institutions, and abstracts from the prior conference
• Advise government on marine science policy issues
• Raise public awareness of marine science through activities, press releases, public activities, and awards
